In preparation for studios at The Cass beginning next week, in a small group, I visited Nous Vous as well as Lakwena’s studio spaces to observe the rich and inspirational environment these practioners work in; to emulate this culture in our own studios.
Between the two visits, I felt most intrigued by Nous Vous studio as Nicolas Burrows described the everchanging way in which the space functions to suit the needs of those in it. I was drawn to the erratic yet organised atmosphere of the space and the way in which practice of play is exhibited through ideas, lists and scribbles stuck up on the walls. When asked about the philosphy of Nous Vous, Nicolas Burrows said:
“We’re illustrators with a designers way of thinking”
Something that was poignant to me as I feel as though this describes the process I feel I work by. I don’t see myself as having a particular illustration style but adapting my skills and ideas to my interpretation of a project’s brief that allows a successful, well fulfilled outcome.
The proactivity in this studio as also seen in Lakwena’s studio, through her inspiration wall and lived on table, is something I would personally like to bring to the Local Universe Studio at The Cass as inhabiting the space, constantly producing work and exploration will help encourage new ideas and ways of thinking but at the same time being mindful of the others working in the space and their needs.
