Cyanotype Experiments with My Collected Plants

After putting my pressed plants under a microscope, I realised that I needed to gain a better understanding of how specimens are presented as such, especially after my visits to the Grant Museum and Natural History Museum, seeing how they’re placed in jars and labelled – the best way to do this by putting my collection through a range of different processes. Beginning with photograms.

Drawing Out my Initial Poster Ideas

Before working with images directly from my sketchbook, I scribbled three possible composition ideas as a guide so I didn’t feel like I was just making it up as I was going along and that creating a more developed mock up in Adobe Composition would be less time consuming. The process of doing this was helpful in getting me to visualise how my idea would fit to the final poster format, which isn’t something I had really considered in great detail beforehand.

Working with Imagery from My Own Creative Process

Looking at the ways in which other sketchbooks are presented made me think about how best to present my own creative exploration/ process; in terms of the illustration of different materials in many of the publications I looked at, as well as the inclusion of rough sketchbook notes – which is appealing because they feel authentically created.

Reworking my FMP focus

After writing my own brief for my FMP, to reimagine London as a new place, and working observationally based on visits to Kew Gardens and the Barbican Conservatory, I felt like I got myself into a situation where I was pointlessly mark making and the illustrations themselves, even just in my sketchbook weren’t helping me develop my initial thinking. I put this down to the fact I had been exploring nature spaces and drawing that’s somehow made me feel like I’m being slightly closed minded.

Experimenting with Handwritten Text

Reviewing my work on the second hand shop, I realised that the small descriptive paragraph I had written might in fact be the context I need to present (with or without my object prints) in order to really express my experience and after finding those old postcards, I started experimenting with my own handwritten memories of my derive in the second hand shop.

Finding Vintage Typography on Location

As I began thinking about the experience I’m trying to communicate of the the second hand shop, it dawned on me to perhaps use the written experiences I made after my derives and maybe play with actually using the text itself rather than focusing on the objects in the direct way I have. Before even beginning to play with any kind of text, I decided to go on a typography hunt within the shop itself and to my surprise, I stumbled across a lot of old type. I was however drawn to the intriguing collection of 100 year old postcards on display in a box for sale.

Reflecting and Refining my Idea

Looking back at my lino prints, despite having come up with a concept of a continuous print that reflects the continuous view of objects within the second hand shop, I felt a disconnection between what I had printed and what the objectives of the brief are- to explore the relationship between location and experience. Thus I decided it appropriate to go back and do another derive at my chosen location.

Lino Print Workshop

After initial derives at both Liverpool Street Station and Brick Lane, we were encouraged within the studio to push the observational drawings into another medium- specifically lino print. As we’re given the workshop information prior to it taking place, and having done lino printing before, I made sure that  had some drawings that had bold, thick lines that would translate well for this particular method.

Initial Ideas for My D&AD Outcomes

Being an illustrator that enjoys using mostly traditional hand-crafted techniques when creating my work, I decided to pick the D&AD brief set by Adobe because I felt it was the most appropriate in terms of how I enjoy working. The brief is to dig deep into hard-won wisdom and life lessons and celebrate those through illustration or photography by creating a series of 3 posters or prints.

Summer Show Initial Thinking

After being briefed on the design competition element involving the summer show, myself, Logan, James and Hayley sat together and discussed the ideas we had for possible concepts for the summer show. The ideas we discussed all in some way had some way of promoting the facilities at The Cass as well as showcasing our work. Thinking about these ideas first would prove helpful in going to exhibitions as we would know what exhibition techniques to look for that would fit the concepts we discussed.
